OTHERWISE ENGAGED is the story of Amity Dorcaster who meets Benedict Stanbridge when she encounters him as he has been shot and left for dead. She saves his life and the town get know one another while traveling on a ship to New York. When they part, Benedict promises to see her in London. Weeks later, Amity is in London and barely escapes from The Bridegroom, a serial killer who kills scandalous women. When Benedict arrives in London, he is determined to help save Amity from the killer.I really, really liked the beginning of this book. It was unique and Amity is such a strong heroine. Her fan that plays such an important part of the book is unique and the scene where Amity uses it to escape from the killer was dramatic and tension filled. I thought the beginning was so good but to me the remainder of the book just didn't fulfill that promise.
I really wanted to love this book but in the end could only like it. I didn't feel any particular interest in the romance as we see it between the main characters. I wish we had seen more of their earlier time together because it seemed like the true romance story happens then. Once they are in London the two already have a connection and I felt somewhat cheated.
Also, there really wasn't much tension in the mystery since the revelation is not one that the reader can figure out from reading the story but is just revealed as a complete unknown. The additional villains are easily figured out since there are few characters that could be the villain.
It may seem like I didn't like the book, but I generally did. It had many of the hallmarks of the author's books that I like but it didn't have that extra that makes it a must read. I really enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz in all her pseudonyms and I have come to expect more. This is a nice book that I liked but is not one that I will turn back to and read again and again.

Otherwise Engaged Amanda Quick 9780399165146 Books Reviews
This was a great read..It kept my interest all the way through! I'm very glad this book was missing the psychic elements and was more like her earlier books. I used to consume all of Amanda Quick's books, but when they changed by adding the paranormal aspects, I stopped reading them. I just like the mystery, adventure and romance. I would even like to see the author write some medieval books similar to her story Mystique. Otherwise, if she continues writing books similar to any of her early books--especially minus the psychic part--that would be wonderful!
I put off reading this book for quite some time. I had grown tired of the rehashing of plots that Quick seemed content to publish lately. I'm very glad I finally decided to take the plunge. Otherwise Engaged was a very pleasant surprise!
I really liked all the characters. Amity and Benedict were delightfully drawn, three-dimensional characters. The secondary characters are interesting and add to the overall plot in a logical manner.
Although Quick used her stock-in-trade Alpha male and quirky heroine, Benedict and Amity were slightly different in that Amity was the more experienced, world traveler, while Benedict was the less exciting, precise planner. That doesn't mean they didn't mesh well.
The plot was fairly complex with a minor twist. I have read other reviews that complained that Quick made the story too convoluted and hard to follow. I disagree. I enjoyed the plot line and had no trouble understanding, or following the action. I consider Otherwise Engaged a welcome change from Quick's paranormal, formula driven books of the last few years. This was a solid and enjoyable read for me.
This book had a very strong beginning, with the heroine meeting the hero wounded and helpless in an alley in a back port. She picks him up and nurses him back to health on the return voyage back to England.
Even though the rest of the book doesn't live up to the strong beginning, it is still a fun read. The heroine makes her living writing as a travel journalist. Unfortunately we don't see any of this activity because she is engaged in helping the hero to track down a deranged murderer known as the Bridegroom.
The book is a pleasant read, but ultimately forgettable. I read it in June and had to go to to refresh my memory. The cover brought it back because of the amazing fan the heroine uses as a weapon.
Not every book has to be memorable. This was a pleasant read and worth the $1.99 I paid for it.
The story was okay, but not one of Quick's best or a story I would re-read. I purchased the book because the description said it was the next in the "Ladies of Lantern Street" series (and I had quite enjoyed the first two), but that did not seem to be the case at all, as there was no mention of Lantern Street or the other ladies (unless I totally missed them). I read this book and then "Til Death Do Us Part" right after and the stories felt very repetitive.
While the writing was good (as one would expect), and I enjoyed the resourcefulness of Amity and her deadly fan, the story just didn't engage me. The characters were likeable, but the connection between Amity and Benedict was not nearly as developed as I would expect from a romance story.
The plot is convoluted, contrived and formulaic; the style and dialog are wooden; but the book's great failing is that main characters are so poorly drawn. They seem two-dimensional and unappealing. The love scenes are mechanical. Worst, there is no tenderness or real spark or humor in their relationship. All the above is in stark contrast to some of Quick's better works, like Deception, Ravished, and Mistress, which make the reader care for their protagonists.
Very disappointing. Dialogue was trite. The sex was embarrassingly awkward, with no romantic buildup at all. Story wise started off interesting, reverted to boring, then ridiculous, and ended everything too tidy and neat. Information dumping, and too soon. Not enough character development to even relate to the characters, or care. A rushed piece of fluff. Such a surprise from this author whose stories in the past I’ve loved.
