Absolutely intriguing! The writer is polished with intricate details. What I truly came away with is actually feeling I could see all the details of the country and city, the cold rain, freezing snow and ice, the rooms, buildings, businesses, etc.

Many books I have recently read have horrendous grammatical errors that distract from the stories. Deborah's writing is beyond the best I've read in many years.

The Gilded Lily A Novel Deborah Swift 9781250001900 Books Reviews

Having read many books around the turn of the century, I enjoyed this one particularly as it has a different and engaging storyline. It was another book I couldn't put down...read in a day and enjoyed the characters and storline immensely. I actually would give it a 4.5, but wasn't given the option. A young woman's very difficult life situation during an era that definitely didn't have womens rights!
Sadie and Ella both sisters from the country with an abusive father after the death of their mother. Ella gets a position as a maid in Thomas home where she becomes his lover yet at his untimely death she and her sister pilfers from him and runs to London. Sadie and Ella stays on the run because Thomas twin brother blames them for his death and all of the stolen items taken from the home. Ella meets Jay a pawnbroker/loan shark who she believes likes her however, he has his own secrets and death seems to surround him and his friends as she becomes an employee of his.
It was all right, but nothing about it surprised me. There were some dark themes throughout and it was difficult getting through to the end. Wouldn't really recommend it as a story, but the writing was well done, and kept the story moving.
This story, about two sisters who escaped their village after robbing a dead man, will hold your interest. We wonder throughout the book of they will ever make it out alive. Will Ella see her sister for who she really is. Thank goodness Dennis shows up and gives them a place to live. Ella moved on but Sadie is stuck in the turmoil of hiding and staying put. I had to read this story quickly as I needed to know what would happen to the girls.
Fast read. Liked the description of weather and landscape of the times. Plot was predictable in some ways, but you do want the girls to make it.
Deborah Swift's style portrays old England in the 1600s vividly and realistically.I am right there running through the streets with my heart pounding, right along with the main characters and sisters, Ella and Sadie. I didn't like Ella (secondary character) in the first book, 'The Lady's Slipper,' but by the middle of The Gilded Lily, I sympathize with her and not only do I want her to get her comeuppance and must keep reading to find out if she indeed does, I also want her to be redeemed. Ella's sister, Sadie, is my favorite and I also must stay with the story to see if she triumphs over her sorrows and predicament. There's suspense, a little romance, and excellent character development. I can't wait to read the next novel by this knowledgeable and skilled historical fiction writer.
An astonishingly perfect historical fiction piece which shows a side of the Restoration Period in London that is rarely seen. I was mesmerized by this author's attention to the details of this time. I could not put down this book. I cannot wait for this author's next book.
